Joseph Charles Philpot

1803-1869

J.C. Philpot was born in 1803 and brought up in the Church of England.  He gained an M.A. degree at Oxford University and became a fellow of Worcester College.  It was during a stay in Ireland as a private tutor that he became deeply concerned about his soul and eternity and returning to England, took up the post of curate at Stadhamptom, Oxfordshire.  Becoming acquainted with some who were Strict Baptists who highly esteemed his ministry and being incresingly troubled with the inconsistencies of the Church of England Services he eventually resigned his post in the Church of England and associated with the Baptists for the rest of his life. About the time of his resignation he was asked to help with the editorship of the newly-launched Gospel Standard magazine (1835), of which he became joint editor with John Mackenzie till 1849 and sole editor from then till his death in 1869.  His sermons were widely reported and highly valued, but it was his defence of the doctrine of the Eternal Sonship of the Lord Jesus for which he is probably most remembered.

The Eternal Sonship of the Lord Jesus Christ

J. C. Philpot

In the early 1860s J.C. Philpot, as editor of the Gospel Standard Magazine was involved in some controversy with other Baptists who maintained that the Lord Jesus was not the true and only begotten Son of God the Father, but was only a son by office, or by his birth, or resurrection.  This book was written to gather together the points he had made in various magazine articles as a defence of the orthodox, reformed doctrine that the Lord Jesus is the true, proper Son of God from all eternity.
